This project was inspired by the playful spirit of a childhood favorite: Melissa & Doug's Suspend Family Game. The goal of the game is to successfully suspend the metal rods of varying lengths without letting them all fall.

Suspend hangers are designed to be hooked onto a rack via the central loop (horizontally) or either side loop (vertically), allowing for versatile configurations. This innovative system seamlessly hangs clothing and interlocks to store footwear, turning a simple storage solution into a tactile experience that blends functionality and play.

I used Blender to 3D model my design because it is a great free 3D modeling source. First, I made a rough model of the general shape using circle planes and extuding or spinning them as necessary. Then, I iterated over that design a few times removing harsh edges and adding more definition to the three hooks. As for visual design, I wanted to stay rounded and soft when it came to shape, colors, lighting, and materials. I decided to go with a mix of beige and yellow for the backdrop integrating brushed silver metal for the body and white rubber for the hooks of the product. I added some pin holes and a hook. Finally, the ratchet system was modeled and placed inside at the top of each end hook.

I primarily worked with the Ultimaker Cura app during the printing process and the printer itself. Adjusting settings such as print speed and infill pattern are necessary in order for a print to come out as intended. Also, a print will reveal itself if it was built poorly. the way it was modeled are instructions for the printer to keep in mind. There are two materials used, TPU and PLA filament. TPU is flexible, which is why I used it in the ratchet system because each prong needed some spring to work properly. It also needs more time to cool while printing. Thus, I found that adjusting the print speed was helpful when having such a small print as the ratchet system. PLA, on the other hand, is hard plastic and more fragile. I used this for the body, both outer tubes, and both end hooks.

The final product includes fully functioning hook, telescoping pin, and ratchet systems assembled in both clothing and shoe orientation. By combining modularity, creativity, and engineering, Suspend Hangers redefine the way we think about shoe storage, making it not just practical but also a delightful part of your daily routine.

—> The liquid rubber proved too malleable to produce a clean finished look. Instead, trying a custom rubber sleeve may be a solution.
